Denver Mattress awakens lodging market
Denver Mattress is capable of processing orders, including specialty products, quickly because it is a mattress manufacturer, distributor and retailer.
Customers of Denver Mattress tend to be more upscale hotels that are trying to differentiate themselves because all hotels are selling a night’s rest, according to Mark Koch, director of hospitality.

Denver—Zero to 6,000 hotels in five years.

That’s how fast Denver Mattress Co. made an imprint on the lodging industry.

“We are in incredible growth mode,” said Mark Koch, director of hospitality for the Denver-based brand.

Koch said the company has only dipped its big toe in the hotel waters.

“We’re relatively new to the hospitality industry, and it’s nice to have that many properties as customers already,” Koch said. “But there is plenty of room to grow.”

Koch has been in the mattress business his entire career and switched his focus to hotels five years ago.

“It’s amazing how big the industry is,” Koch said. “It’s been exciting for us to get to know it because of how well our product has been accepted. Buyers understand the value.”

While the brand has three main product lines, it can produce specialty orders quickly, he said.

“That’s where we can differentiate our company from some of the others,” Koch said.

He said the company is looking to become more involved with larger hotel chains as it begins its second five-year run.

Denver Mattress is part of the Furniture Row Cos. family. Furniture Row also includes Sofa Mart, Big Sur Waterbeds, Bedroom Expressions and Oak Express retailers.

With more than 250 retail outlets sprinkled among the Furniture Row companies, including 70 Denver Mattress locations, the brand has a wide distribution network, according to Koch.

“We have the ability to use all Furniture Row stores as distribution points,” Koch said. “We pretty much can reach any hotel location pretty quickly. It also gives us a lot of leeway and we have become incredibly competitive as far as the freight situation goes.”

Denver Mattress is considered unique among its competitors in the bedding industry because it is a mattress manufacturer and mattress retailer, according to Koch. It manufactures, distributes and retails its own private label, which provides control over how its products are priced and sold.

“We tend to be more in upper-end hotels,” Koch said. “Customers who are trying to differentiate themselves. As the industry grows and hotels add new and different kinds of products, they still are basically selling a night’s rest. That’s where we help.”

The company has two manufacturing facilities in Denver that total 100,000 square feet.

All of this enables the company to provide a quick turnaround for orders.

“We pretty much run a fluid operation,” Koch said. “We can turn around a typical order in 15 days. We try to produce as much product as we can and put it right on the trucks for delivery.”

That helps the company attain its ultimate goal, according to Koch.

“The most important thing is service,” he said. “Everyone is price conscious while looking for solid product. We manufacture our mattresses ourselves and stress quality.”
