AAHOA’s Award for Excellence recognizes the Asian American hotelier who has demonstrated strong leadership, high standards of excellence, and someone who is making a significant contribution to the lodging industry. The winner for 2007 is Atul M. Patel, of HMB Management Inc. based in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

During a later interview Atul stated, “This award is a result of many people’s hard work; I give immense credit to my great team, partners, and family for always supporting me. I really appreciate this award because it comes from such a prestigious organization that is helping to change the arena in which we conduct business.”

Atul Patel is the CEO of HMB Management Inc., which is a management company geared towards commercial real estate with a focus on the hospitality industry. As a result of his sheer hard work and intelligent approach to development, currently HMB controls commercial real estate worth $135 million. The company is experiencing tremendous growth and expects to add assets worth $130 million in next two years when a 180 room hotel in Manhattan and other projects in New Jersey are completed bringing the total assets of the group worth close to $265 million.

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, it was natural for Atul to go into business himself. Upon completing a pharmacy education in India, he migrated to Nairobi, Kenya where he worked in a pharmaceutical manufacturing company. After coming to the US a few years later, he continued to work in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1988, wanting to try something different, he acquired two limited service properties in North Carolina. Thoroughly learning about the hospitality industry in NC, he moved to the Northeast and began developing hotels.

Presently, Atul is looking to develop further in the US as well as internationally. Bringing to the table his vast industry experience, gathered knowledge in various fields, and experienced team; Atul would like to expand HMB further by taking part in joint ventures.

Active in the hospitality industry, Atul is the recipient of several hotel industry related awards, including the prestigious “Deal of The Year” award from Hilton Hotel Corporation in 2005 for the development of Homewood Suites, Edgewater/NYC Area. This hotel was developed as a part of a $250 million mixed use project and a unique concept. In addition, he is on the development advisory board of Starwood Hotels to develop their new brands.

Because of his active interest in social and philanthropic activities, Atul has been awarded several prestigious awards from various social organizations recognizing and appreciating his contributions to their worthy causes.

Atul is also an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. Atul is strongly supported in his personal as well as professional life by his wife, Tina, who is also the CFO of the company and they have two children Binita and Manan who are working their way to follow Atul’s footsteps in the real estate and hospitality industry.
